New Zealand workplaces are twice as deadly as Australia’s and six times more deadly than those in the UK. No one should die or be injured in the workplace. It’s time for change.

The Health and Safety Reform Act has now been passed and came into force in April 2016. This amended act requires kiwi business owners to either take Health and Safety seriously, or face jail time.

Risk is multifaceted. In addition to health and safety risks, a business must also understand and act on them. Failing to acknowledge and mitigate these risks can have serious consequences in terms of economic performance and professional reputation.

The fact of the matter is, you can’t manage what you don’t know. Risk registers as part of a risk management plan enable your business to understand the nature of your risks and develop strategies for managing and mitigating risks.

Ignoring risk is no longer an option. The new Health and Safety Reform Act introduces the concept of a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU). PCBUs are business entities, rendering business directors responsible for any mishaps. Under the new act PCBUs are required to ensure as far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of workers employed or engaged so that they may not be at risk from work.

Failure to do so will be met with a new maximum fine of $3 million and/or up to five years in jail. It may sound intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. The first step to reducing your risk is to develop and implement a risk management plan. That’s where SafetyFirst can help.

SafetyFirst’s software is designed to meet the new legislation, providing tools to identify, minimise, isolate and eliminate risks not just identify them.

Our easy to use risk register is responsive and accessible from any online location enabling users to manage their risks both from a central office or remotely.
